I Gave You

photo James Finch

The video for I Gave You that will be appearing on the cdep from Bonny & Matt, can be seen on the director Mike Piscitelli's website.

Also supposedly by years end we will have a new Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album, a 2 lp/cd entitled Summer in the Southeast. So be on the look out for that gem.

Adam Selzer

...and speaking of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western) Hinah has a few tracks available online from his performance in studio from November 9, 2003. This is a solo performance in which Adam had this to say (via Hinah), "here are some songs i recorded exactly one year after the first hinah session. There are a couple that were written while in europe, and i can't remember the where or what or how of the others. i've probably forgotten how to play them all now so they most likely won't be recorded again. hope you can enjoy them..."-Adam Selzer

Racingpaperplanes

Racingpaperplanes is a Swedish band/solo project from Richard Wilson. The band seems to have gone through many stages, with Wilson always remaining the constant. Their sound reminds me of Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia, Magnolia Electric Company) Neil Young, with a touch of Will Oldham. Acoustic guitar and soft, lonesome lyrics help propel Racingpaperplanes to the forefront of what I am currently listening to. Not only do we have well put together songs, but we also do get some great solo guitar work that furthers the comparrison to Molina and company. Their website is quite extensive on providing the inquisitive viewer an overlook and sampling of the band. They also have a blog which can be found here. The band's current release is Self Sleep Service and can be purchased through Tract Records here. The samples are from this album, and samples from past work can be found on the band's website, along with pictures, a discography, and news on upcoming ep's and shows.

The Black Spoons

It's funny how things happen. Right now, being 4:30am and I can't sleep, I decided to check the old blog out and to my surprise, Tom from The Black Spoons posted a comment here thanking me for mentioning the band. I say it's funny, because today I was listening to Your Softest Leather and thought man, I think I will post a bit about The Black Spoons tomorrow. It's just weird how I was going to do that and then between the hours since last post and now, Tom was kind enough to drop a line.

Anyway on to more with The Black Spoons. If you haven't heard these guys from NY and their album My Dear Radium yet, you are truely missing out. "My Dear Radium has an infectious effect. It's light and catchy as it first enters the ear, but then it lodges into the back of the brain and starts to have an affect on the listener's cognitive ability." - MVRemix.com And I agree with that quote totally! I started listening to them and they kept popping up on the ipod and then I found myself singing the songs in my head, I put them on a mix, but that wasn't enough because they have been on every playlist I have had since then.

"We don't deserve to be so pretty but we are" is the first line from Your Softest Leather and that has to be one of the greatest first lines to any song. It reminds me of Velvet Underground/Bowie meets the modern NY sound and this applys to most songs on the album, but The Softest Leather is the real stand out to what I have heard. With its slow seductive lyrics and its upbeat chorus, this needs to be on every college/independent radio station, hell evey radio station, because these guys are on their way to bigger and bigger things. The album is full of tight riffs and intellegent arrangments/lyrics and, thankfully not the overplayed sound of most rock bands today. One thing I love about their music is that I can picture them performing on stage although I have never seen the band. To me that says alot.

Well, thanks again Tom, for stopping by and taking the time to say hi. I apppreciate it, and check out The Black Spoons's website here and Tom's blog, Indie Night School. Below are two tracks from their album My Dear Radium. Enjoy!

V for Vendetta trailer is finally up at the WB site. I read the comic and enjoyed the story, but I hope they can pull this off. The film has everything going for it, a large budget, Natalie Portman, and the major part, the Wachowski brothers (they did a little trilogy called the Matrix) Check out the trailer here.

"The Godfather of Ska Laurel Aitken died on Sunday, at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, England. Born in Cuba in 1927, he emigrated to Jamaica and started recording in 1958 and in the following year he recorded charttopping "Boogie in my Bones".Later he would emigrate to London and continue to record hundreds more sides for the likes of Melodisc and Pama. When the 2Tone era started he was once again in the limelight and he had his UK top 60 hit "Rudi Got Married".Laurel Aitken's is a legend of Jamaican music with a career spanning more than five decades." - Reggae News

He was a great performer and if you like ska, hell, reggae in general, I hope you have heard of Aitken, but if not here are a few tracks for you to sample.

With a new album comes a new sound. The music here is well produced and gone are the answering machine recorders and in its place is a rich sound of celebration. The album can be broken down into 3 sections in my opinion. Section one is the Devendra we have known and loved and this element runs throughout the whole album, but him solo with an acoustic guitar and soft spoken lyrics is what I mean. The second is a diving into his roots with short Spanish ballads that invoke classical love songs. The third being an influence of having a whole band (Hairy Fairy Band) and the sound reminds me honestly like a communal ceremony. Manson and family, Hari Krisna's, George Harrison (with Beatles via 67/68) and (with Ravi Shanker 70's stuff), it just seems that they are all there chanting, singing, with some songs having an almost tribal beat to them and Devendra leading his followers in singalongs. All the songs flow well and I can't stop listening to what I have heard. He focuses on birth and children alot on this album and stand outs are Chinese Children, Mama Wolf (on sampler), I Feel Like a Child(on sampler), and the slightly controversial Little Boys (damn good though). This is quite possibly the best album of the year and the artwork gets my vote for cover of the year. The stuff I have heard, Im not sure if its supposed to be out there. Im not sure if it is demos, leaked material, or what, but I can't wait for the official album out September 13th. You can preorder the album here on cd, and I'm not sure if they will be releasing this on vinyl, but I hope so. This album deserves that much and hopefully with a gatefold cover.

Listen to the official sampler (4 tracks) of the album here.

Enough of reviewing an album that's not even out yet, so here are a few released tracks from Banhart:

Seabear

Just came across SeaBear on a french mp3 blog and I can't stop listening to this guy from Iceland. The tracks for you to sample are from the debut ep Singing Arc (2005). The ep is home produced and from what I'm guessing just free from his website. The songs are a mix of everything ranging from Album Leaf- ish on Do You Still Like Scarcrows to an up-tempo modern day Nick Drake- ish on Singing Arc. From upbeat to Sunday morning music this 8 track ep covers the gambit. I wish I knew more about the band, but there are 8 tracks on the website so check that out and he also has a LiveJournal so check that out as well.

Un Chien Andalou (1929) Luis Bunuel & Salvador Dali's surrealist masterpiece is "now" available for download, since falling into public domain, from Archive.org. Un Chien Andalou is based loosely on the dreams of Bunuel and Dali. Bunuel's dream centered around a slender cloud slicing the moon in half (ie. the razor blade slicing through the eye), while Dali's dream focused on a hand being engulfed by ants. With themes of love, sex, death, decay, one would expect the film to fit right in with that of modern day David Lynch or Darren Arnofsky, but I suggest eveyone see this film at one point in their lives. I saw it in film school and was literally amazed by it. If you have a highspeed connection definently download this film.

Also saw a film this weekend that I absolutely loved. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes Anderson. I have loved Wes Anderson's work since Bottle Rocket and this film falls only slightly behind Rushmore as being Anderson's best. The Life Aquatic surrounds Oceanographer/Documenterian Steve Zissou and his rag tag team, "Team Zissou", as they hunt down the dreaded Jaguar Shark that killed his partner/friend. The film is still filled with a wonderful hodge podge of eclectic characters, but in this film, Anderson introduces us to a plot that pulls the viewer through surrealist settings, dialogue, and adventure as only Wes Anderson can. No longer are we focuesed on the hipster character solely, but now Anderson has added a new angle to his storytelling and frankly I can't get enough. I saw the movie, or should I say "film" two times already and hope to watch it again this weekend. Check out the trailer to the film here.

Another great aspect to this film is it's amazing soundtrack. Like his two previous works, Anderson truely uses the soundtrack as another character in the film. The music throughout the film is primarily Seu Jorge covering David Bowie songs in Porteguese. They sound absolutely brilliant and they literally move the film from one act to the next, and honestly I was sitting there wondering, what would the next Bowie classic be. Check out the soundtrack at iTunes or here.

The Shins / James Mercer (live)

Feeling a little under the weather today so only one post, but it's a good one. I was searching the ol' internet (like usual) and stumbled across two amazing live performances. One from The Shins and one from Shins' front man James Mercer. Amazing sound and amazing quality! The Shins performance is from December 11, 2004 and Mercer's solo acoustic performance is from October 10, 2004.

The Hong Kong

Think Blondie meets modern day, electric fuzz and you will be close to The Hong Kong's sound. Originally from New Orleans, later re-grouping in Brooklyn, NY, The Hong Kong's are just waiting to blow up . They just signed with Ric Ocasek's new label, Inverse Records in March '05 and just got back from being on Tour with the Ceasers. AMG had this to say about their 2004 debut release:

"The Hong Kong's debut record, Rock the Faces, is junk-shop pop at its finest. Built out of parts of various great bands and artists, it shines like a brand new artifact. The list of components reads like a hipster's Christmas wish list: the steady pulse and electronic savvy of Stereolab, the heady rush of classic girl groups like the Shangri-Las, the tough melodic craft of Blondie, and the tin can studio feel of the Jesus and Mary Chain, all topped by the wonderfully tough and rich vocals of Catherine Culpepper" AMG ****

Check out their website, their myspace, and watch a live performance from the Bowery Ballroom here.

Valery's Kin / Apatheia

Apatheia is the band and Valery's Kin is a side project for the group. These guys are from Linkyping, Sweden and at first listen I immediately heard the Devendra Banhart / Pogues reference that music.download refers to. Although there may be similarities, and I use that term loosely, these guys have their own sound and with two different bands, they have the luxury of dabbling in multiple genres and styles. Valery's Kin is my preference if I had to chose just one of the bands, and the reason being is for the lo-fi, acoustic, personal sound they possess. Check out both at Apatheia's official site and download the Valery's Kin album here.

Kiddie Records

I was Surfing the net today and through a link of a link, I came across Kiddie Records Weekly.

"THE PROJECT

For the entire 2005 year, Basic Hip Digital Oddio will be featuring weekly stories and songs from the golden age of children's records, a period which ran from the mid 1940s into the early 1950s. This era produced a wealth of classics, headed by Capitol's Record-Readers and the RCA Victor Little Nipper series. Each one of these recordings has been carefully transferred from the original 78s (plus a few 45s) and encoded to MP3 format for you to download and enjoy.

What an amazing show and all before his spiral down the rabbit hole into brilliance (the dark trilogy). Wake Up. Report.

I hear similarities to alot of bands here (Braid for instance), but the nice thing about this is, at least they took the best parts and transformed them into their own. Wake Up. Report. is a four piece band from Belleville, Illinois and have released their debut record, Record or Record. They are on the right path to success and already I can't stop listening to The No Vote. Currently you can only get the album at shows, but they are working on a "buy online" section to their website. *Update You can now get the cd at their website

Line up:
Gerald Gregory Bach Jr.- drums
Daniel Huffman- bass
Steven James Breidenbach- electric guitars
Bill Hudgins- electric guitars, Rhodes piano, and lead vocals.

Check out the band's official site for more info and upcoming shows.

DDR-30

DDR-30 are a band coming out of Istanbul, Turkey, but they sound just like something from the 1995 Tampa Scene, via The Van Pelt. Upon seeing this cover art I had to give these guys a listen. The three songs that you can download here, are similar and belong to the same band obviously, but each has their own "feel" and take me back to the days of small shows, in the back corner of record shops.

Line up:
Uner Altay: guitar, keyboards and vocals,
Cihan Cinemre: base and vocals,
Can Batukan: vocals, guitar and keyboards,
Murat Babalik: drums

Uncommon Folk

A great site I stumbled upon that devotes itself to "...all of the amazing souls making sounds that are based in the ancient traditions of folk music."-Josh Honn

The site reviews tracks/albums/artists and throws in an occasional interview, and each post is accompanied by an mp3 of said muscian. A great read and make sure to check out the archived section. Uncommon Folk also has a podcast, so make sure to subscribe to that as well. Check out Josh's site here.

Neutral Milk Hotel ( live )

Im pretty excited on a discovery I found last night. For fans of NMH this is a goldmine of mp3's and quicktime video. Dating back to 1993, we have demos, live concerts from various cities, and video of many of the shows. There are some on the front page, but click sounds on the left side menu and await your treasure. Looking/Listening purposes only, of course. ...but then they buried her alive

Clap Your Hands!

Listening to the tracks available from their website as I write this and scrounging up enough money to go out and get this cd from Insound. Read what Pitchfork had to say after giving their S/T debut album a 9.0. This is a perfect blend of what is not out there and I recommend checking out this collective of Alec Ounsworth, Lee Sargent, Robbie Guertin, Tyler Sargent, and Sean Greenhalgh, otherwise known as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Speaking of Tom LoMacchio/Deadwood Divine in my last post, I thought I would link you to a Tom LoMacchio track from his 1999 cd Five Years Later-

(mp3) Apart

Also you can grab Common Perception, an instrumental Deadwood Divine track from Insound here.

This guy put out some of the most inspirational and meaningful records in the last 10 years.

Now he is in a band called Stereograph, and boy has his sound changed from one moniker to the next. He's gone from acoustic/emo/screaming, to acoustic/piano/singing and now his latest band sounds New Wave via The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order. Check out Stereograph's website (nice historical overview) and their my space for music samples.

Today's find is n.Lannon, a San Franciscian named Nyles Lannon and his 2004 album Chemical Friends. I have been listening to him for a week or so now and can't stop putting his tracks on my mixes. He reminds me of a mix of Tom LoMacchio solo and Deadwood Divine with a touch of Postal Service, and Elliot Smith. He has created a great record in Chemical Friends, in which he produced from his home computer. A balanced mix of raw acoustic talent and computer enhanced tracks. Take a look at his website for more about Lannon and for multiple downloads of various projects, including Film School. Truely a great album.

Lazarus.:Last track tonight, and I guess I'm more into slow stuff tonight, but this is Croslin St. from Trevor Montgomery, who is now sporting the name Lazarus. ..."the voice that sings with projected whispers while a lonely acoustic guitar trails slowly behind."-bP Check out the track for download here.

Stand Corrected!?

While in an earlier post, I felt that the results of the G8 summit were a "success" if having to choose a side, but felt this way only because I thought less would have actually come from the meeting. So in my mind, if someone over achieves what is expected from them, then that would have to be termed a success, right? Well, I know problems in Africa and around the world for that matter, are not fixed , nor will they be totally, but here is Make Poverty History's response to the G8. Very eye opening and an interesting read. Open your mind, that's all I can say.

New Name for a New Year

With a new day, comes a new year, and on that note...The Perm & The Skullet blog was born. When I first started this blog, I wasn't sure if anyone would even care what I had to say or if anyone would ever visit the site. I've been doing this since May and it has become like an appendage. Hayhurst's Blog was just that a blog for me and my friends, but now that people from around the world have come to check out this blog, I feel that yes it is my blog still, but that it's now bigger than that. I may be wrong and you can have your own opinion, but I felt that a new name was in order. A name for the site and not just my name.

And so, as I mentioned earlier, The Perm & The Skullet is born. You may ask, "why that name?" The name comes from a faux band that my friends and I created after a night at The Flying Saucer here in Raleigh. The night started like any other, but would culminate with the meeting of two middle aged individuals, one male, one female, one perm and one skullet. They chattered amongst themselves, courting and toying with one another. Finding this combination fascinating and bizarre, we could not turn away. Of course to this day we still mention that night and the wonderful name of The Perm and the Skullet. The name is just so great and it can be used for any form of entertainment, not just a band. An adolescent novel, Are You There God, It's Me The Perm & The Skullet, a tv show like Scarecrow & Mrs. King or Hunter, The Perm & The Skullet, Saturday nights on CBS. But yet, the band is where we started and still find the most laughs in. So be on the look out for our first album "Greatest Hits".

I hope everyone has enjoyed this blog as much as I have and I hope to continue to bring you great sites, good music, insightful thought, and films from around the globe. Check back soon and thanks for stopping by.

G8 Results

In a nutshell:
G8 SUMMIT RESULTS
  • Stalemate on climate change as US position barely budges
  • Britain is to host a 1 November meeting on climate change, to assess progress
  • G8 nations agree to full debt cancellation for 18 countries, while African countries call for debt relief for all Africa
  • EU members pledge to reach a collective aid target of 0.56% of GDP by 2010, and 0.7% by 2015
  • The G8 agrees a $50bn (£28.8bn) boost to aid
  • A 'signal' for a new deal on trade
  • Universal access to anti-HIV drugs in Africa by 2010
  • G8 commits to training 20,000 peacekeepers for Africa
  • African leaders to commit to democracy and good governan
(BBC)

So was it a success? My view is that yes it was. Reason being is that I did not think that this much would actually be accomplished. Unfortunately climate issues have reached a stalemate, but hopefully in November we can get something accomplished. As far as African aid, whipping the debt of 18 countries and $50bn in aid money is a lot of money and this has to be hailed as a success and I hope the public's outcry help determine this large chunk of change. Ultimately Africa needs to look out for Africa.
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who heads the African Union, said "The G8 leaders are now saying to African leaders, 'yes', if you do your side of the deal we will do our side of the deal." and I couldn't agree more, but we need to make sure that the monies get to the people, the children, who need it most, not to the corrupte leaders that shave off 40% for their cars and palaces, and I hope that something to that regard will be put into place. If you looked at this G8 summit and hoped for the US to do a 180 on Climate and to rid all of Africa of all debt, then I guess you would call this event a failure, but realistically I would have to say it was a step in the right direction and moving forward is always better than moving back.

3hive

From mp3's to quality posts about music, 3hive has it. Here's the setup: Paragraph or two about the artist/song/album followed by 3 to 6 mp3's from that artist. Antony and the Johnsons, Death Cab, Postal Service, Devendra Banhart, Iron and Wine, Magnolia Electric Company, hot "indie rock" you name it. Check it out at 3hive.

Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blues is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard and everytime I share it with someone else, they have at least acknowledged the beauty of it. I bring it up because my parents actually gave me a copy of this album on vinyl today for my birthday. It is hard to find and in the condition mine is in, even harder. Included was the original record sleeve, gatefold cover and insert, with the vinyl being near mint. Ah, mind numbing.

Anyway, this album is currently unavailable in any format. All we have floating around are vinyl copies and cassettes, but you can't just go down to Best Buy and get this...unfortunantly. Well during my search for this album I came across Dan Addington's site that devotes itself to everything Wilson. He has even produced 2 cds, in which you can purchase, that have the songs from this album, some Beach Boys stuff he did, and unreleased tracks. I bought Dreamer and was stunned. I contacted him and for an extremely low cost (price of cd) he made a copy of the original POB from vinyl and burned me a cd. This guy loves Dennis and wants other to know his music. Check out the site here.

Tracklisting:
River Song (Dennis Wilson/Carl Wilson)
What's Wrong (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson/M. Horn)
Moonshine (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)
Friday Night (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)
Dreamer (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)
Thoughts of You (Dennis Wilson/J. Dutch)
Time (Dennis Wilson/Karen Lamm Wilson)
You and I (Dennis Wilson/Karen Lamm Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)
Pacific Ocean Blue (Dennis Wilson/Mike Love)
Farewell My Friend (Dennis Wilson)
Rainbows (Dennis Wilson/Carl Wilson/S. Kalanich)
End of the Show (Dennis Wilson/Gregg Jakobson)
(get the lyrics here)

This might be my greatest gift of knowledge to you and if you have a hard time getting a copy let me know, but what ever you do, get your hands on these songs!

Firewire to the rescue...again. Not only have I backed up everything on my trusty FW drive, but now have installed and running Panther .9 off it. Working pretty damn good so far. All to bide time, but I have to say I'm impressed at the funtionality of it.

Anyway, another day and some more finds. I hope you had a chance to check out the Mixel Pixel stuff, especially Rob's work.

Some of the artists over at Pixar are now going to create comic book titles under the label: E-Ville Press. Comic Con, San Diego(July 13-17) has the pleasure of debuting some of the new comics. (from Boing Boing)

If you haven't checked out ZeroTV yet, head over there today. Today's feature is Episode 16 of the Mark and Mike Show (the guys from American Movie)

Check out the media artists here at 0100101110101101.

Electric Kingdom by Twilight 22 is clearly the song for the day. Check out TIGERSUSHI for links to buy or take a listen on their player. Cool site.

New and improved?

With a re-formating of a hard drive and re-installing old software and updating all night long, I finally have one HD that is now running 10.3.9. I hope this will last for awhile, while I go get another HD and try to set the new HD up for Panther .9. Who knows? But I'm back again from home...for now. Let's see what's out there...

Jesus is Magic

Sarah Silverman's new film that premired at SXSW.

Pickup Sufjan Steven's Illinoise. You can get it from insound as a pre-order with the new cover art or the itunes store. Don't forget to check out Borrowed Tunes for 2 free tracks.

Check out Bedazzled. A blog about music/movies of an era I wish would return. You won't be disapointed.

You know, on that note, after the long day and it now being 1:26am, I think I will call it a day. Let's hope the G4 holds up. Talk to you tomorrrow. M.

Mixel Pixel and more

Mixel Pixel is a new band to me, but they seem to have been around for quite some time. Their 3rd major record release is coming this month with The Contact Kid. I listened to a few tracks and it grows on you fast. More impressed was I, after viewing their website and the amazing artwork done by band member Rob Corradetti. I grabed a still from their 2nd album and placed it here with a link to their site. Explore the site. It's a MUST! and check out Rob's site here. Truely inspiring prints and drawings.

They also have a myspace account here and Rob has a blog here.

In other news, my mac came back to me and is still running. I had a chance to back up all my audio tracks and pics, so I feel better. Will write more tomorrow. Night-

Mac Death

Well it almost official, I'm loosing one of my internal hard drives on my G4. Unfortunantly it's the one with Panther, iTunes (1000's of songs), and iPhoto (almost 1000 pics). It came back for a while, but it's like my computer won't recognize that the drive exists. I took a look at the disk utilities and it said failing for one of the HD. It looked to be my other HD, but on start up HD1 won't boot. So my week will consist of using my pc for computing (that sucks, trust me) and working on getting my HD1 back long enough to transfer my pics and music. Most of my mp3's are backed up on my ipods so that's o.k. for now, butwhat a pain in the ass. I don't know the life of these guys, but I have had my G4 since 2000 and I didn't think it would go down so soon. If anyone has some ideas on this, please shoot them my way. The picture just made me feel better.
