“As soon as it becomes your profession to critique a book, or movie, or record then, not only do you lose your passion for it, but it loses validity for whoever you’re trying to turn it onto because they’re going to be approaching it from a consumer’s point of view, not from a professional writer’s point of view.”

Simon Joyner

I hope you didn't miss Jajjaguwar's recent release of Simon Joyner's Beautiful Losers: Singles and Compilation Tracks 1994-1999. With all the hussle around here the past few weeks, I nearly forgot about it. Well, don't make my mistake, this is a must own. With his lazy Cohen-like vocals and Lou Reed, via VU, cadence, Joyner has been bringing back pleasent thoughts and memories, reminding me that there's a bar that we need to hold music too. Below is one track from this release and more can be sampled at Jovner's myspace account. Enjoy.

.: One for the Catholic Girls

*edit: The tracks on Myspace from the album are listed below:

.: Fearful Man
.: Hold on to Your Breath

Band of Horses

Band of Horses is my new favorite band. There I said it. Who hasn't already jumped on this train. I feel like I just got to the station and there is standing room only. None the less, I thought I'd mention them here. Please check all the links on my blogroll because I'm almost positive that everyone on there have mentioned these guys.

On March 21st, they release Everything All the Time, on the Sub Pop label and Funeral for their first single. It has been on constant rotation here and if for some reason you have not heard this track or the whole album, I strongly recommend you checking it out. Below are a few demos that have been out for awhile, but I thought nessecary to post here as well. You can also download a whole Band of Horses live show at San Diego Serenade.

Viking Moses!

I was listening to alot of Viking Moses! last night and thought I'd pass it along to you guys. Intense and intimate for sure!

"Many folk musicians adopt a bohemian persona to fit their music, but Viking Moses is the real deal. Living a nomadic life for nearly a decade now, Brendon Massei has released banjo and acoustic guitar albums under several names. Perpetually on tour (since 1996), he has played with Will Oldham, Cat Power, Songs: Ohia and Devendra Banhart, to name a few, yet Massei’s body of work has received little commercial or critical attention. His newest full-length under the Viking Moses moniker, the story-song cycle Crosses, is by far his most accomplished work, and ranks among the best of the newest crop of American folk recordings." - myspace/vikingmoses

JK's Corner: Bob Dylan "Almost Went To See Elvis"

Doing this blog, I've made a lot of friends. Friends from all over the world and it's one of the greatest accomplishments of the P&S. Spreading music to others from around the globe. Well one of the readers who has been hanging around and I've gotten to know a bit more is JK.

Now JK knows his music and loves alot of the same artists that I do. We started talking and the infamous Bob Dylan became the topic of conversation. He was telling me that he had some material that he wanted to share. One thing led to another and here it is. So thanks JK for the great tunes and we hope you enjoy.

The first installment of this new series is Bob Dylan, Almost Went to See Elvis.

"The first 12 songs, from Nashville, are wrongly
identified on the cover as being from NY 1970. The
sound quality is very good. The 1969 material includes
Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Billy Wotten (guitars),
Marshall Grant (bass), and W.S. Holland (drums).
Produced by Bob Johnson, this session was three days
after the 'Nashville Skyline' LP was recorded in the
same studio, with different musicians. The 1970
material is available through the CBS Studios
Reference Recording archives. It was produced by Bob
Johnson as well. This session also produced the "If
Not For You" version that was released on the official
CBS LP 'The Bootleg Series 1-3" The musicians include
George Harrison (guitar), Charlie Daniels (bass &
backing vocals), Billy Mundi (drums), & *Bob Johnson
(piano)" - Bob's Boots

Below are all 19 tracks from this amazing Bootleg. The sound is top notch and you're about to be blown away. Enjoy.

Tracks:
Nashville, 1969:
.: Ghost Riders In The Sky
.:Cupid
.: All I Have To Do Is Dream
.: Gates Of Eden
.: I Threw It All Away
.: I Don't Believe You
.: Matchbox
.: Your True Love
.: Las Vegas Blues
.: Fishing Blues /Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance
.: Rainy Day Women

New York, 1970:

Contrast Podcast

Our good friend over at The Face of Today, Tim, took on the amazing feat of gather music bloggers together to create a podcast for download. The theme of the first podcast was "One" and my contribution was 5 to 1 by the very American band, The Doors. It turned out a little more diverse than I would have thought, but hell, I casted about 5 t0 1 so I guess no one expected that. Anyway it's totally worth the listen and alot of great bloggers took the time to contribute, so check it out here. Thanks again Tim.

Ghost Sessions

Ever wonder what Brian Wilson and the harmonies of the Beach Boys would have sounded like if they wrote minimal folk. Ghost Sessions comes close with their haunting vocals/harmonies and simplistic accompaniment of loose stringed guitars, vox effects, and looped samples.

Ghost Sessions is a project by Richard Wilson from Racingpaperplanes, a band I covered a few months ago. In regards to the project Richard told me how Ghost Sessions came about,

"...Basically came from having a bunch of songs i didn't think fit with racingpaperplanes. And I also had an idea of letting other people contribute their touch to the songs so I will send songs back and forth through the internet, with a few artists I admire. The two first contributors will be Boo Hiss and Grumpy Bear."

His Myspace has this to say about the music, "Songs recorded at night, when the moon and the owls are your friends. A glass of wine, burning candles and incense, a song, a drone, a whisper. A transparent figure on the wall. This is a "band in the making" and will change, morph and progress as we go along. Richard Wilson is the main force behind this recording project but will collaborate with other people from time to time. To not have a manifesto shall be our manifesto."

Limited releases are expected through the spring and summer with the first release, WHAT TO SAY ON THE WAY DOWN, out now on a 3" CDEP limited to 25 copies. Future releases will focus on tracks started by Richard and then passed out to friends to finish up. Tract mates: Boo Hiss, Grumpy Bear and THEATH are among the guest musicians who plan to appear on these releases.

Check out the track, Marigold To Your Soul, from this limited release below. Thanks Richard!

Heart of Gold

By now, you know how much I like Neil Young. Well Heart of Gold is finally coming here, next week in fact, to the Galaxy Cinema in Cary.

"In March 2005, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Four days before he was scheduled for a lifesaving operation, he headed to Nashville, where he wrote and recorded the country folk album PRAIRIE WIND with old friends and family members. After the successful operation and recovery period, he returned to Nashville that August to play at the famed Ryman Auditorium, once again gathering together friends and family for this special performance."

Director Jonathan Demme recorded this amazing event and now the film comes to a theater near you. Check out the website to the film here and the trailer here.

In Other News
-Bat For Lashes debut single will be released on May 8th.
-StudioFix upcoming,
-Bob Dylan bootlegs,

Podcasts

Podcasts. I had three posted here at one time. That was one of the directions I wanted to go here and I plan on continuing that. So, to whet your appetite, here are the first three. The first two were done back in December and the third in January.

The first two have me talking, introducing the songs with a little background and the third is just music (I was sick during the compilation) My goal is to combine these two ideas. More music, less talking, but enough to introduce the band. I also want to intertwine old and new work, so take a listen and imagine the third cast, only with intros or recaps every couple of songs.

TD Reisert: Alahee

Have you ever wondered what Jason Molina would sound like if he slowed everything down. Wait no longer. With his third release on 80H ( the first was a single, the second being an ep, both can be downloaded here and here respectively) TD Reisert brings us his first full length LP in Alahee, a culmination of new material and re-recorded, original songs.

The music of Alahee, pulls on your soul reminding you that there are people in this lonely world other than yourself. That beyond your day to day life, if you just sit back, sometimes you'll be able to hear the beauty in the caos.

I think his press release says it best, describing his music as "complexity in minimal structures". The instrumentaion on the album is haunting and the vocals are broken in all the right places, letting you know that what you are hearing is straight from the heart.

I strongly recommend checking out TD Reisert. You can currently download all the tracks from his previous single and ep from 80H, and come March 21st, his LP, Alahee. You can also purchase handmade copies with exclusive photographs if you are into having something to hold. Check out three tracks from the upcoming Alahee release.

Candy Bars

Stunned, then the question, "Do you suffer from pain dreams?", followed by a Beach Boy I Know the Answer/Pet Sounds piano and bells...and I was hooked. The song, Violets, the band, Candy Bars. This sound is something that I've been waiting for and I should have taken New Granada's word for it when they said they were "over the moon" for these guys.

Candy Bars are Daniel Martinez (Vocals, Guitar, Keys), Ryan Hastings (Drums), and Melissa Castellano (Cello), and they hail from Tampa Florida. The above rant was a stream of mind as I heard that song for the first time. I've now listened to 5 tracks from their debut album, On Cutting Ti-Gers in Half and Understanding Narravation and I'm not disappointed.

It's dream music for the sophisticated listener and the vocals of Martinez are mesmerizing, sinister some times, in a svengali sort of way, luring the listener to follow him down the hole and into aural inebriation. Unfortunetly, the term pop has been thrown around and combined with their name, I can see why someone might shy away, but trust me, this is a must listen and once you hear the first track, you'll need to hear the rest. It's been on here all day.

Visit their myspace to gather more Candy Bars and here to purchase this gem of a debut.

Track A Tiger

One of the joys in my mailbox on my return was a press release from Future Appletree Records about the band Track A Tiger. With their release, Woke up early the day I died, we get a collection of songs leadsinger, Jim Vallet has been working on since 2003. After continuious re-working and even a studio session at Paul Oldham's Rove Studio, the group has finally released the fruits of their efforts. The group, on stage anyways, consists of Jim Vallet, Alisa Jo Monnier, Mike Ciuni, Aaron Wilkins, and Patrick Melvin.

Now I dig their sound, slow, sleepy folkish mixed with rock hooks and on occasion, experimental pops and whistles, but my favorite part of this group, or at least their sound, has to come from the intertwining vocals of Vallet and Monnier. The harmonies between these two are outstanding and on Sound As Ever, even envoke hints of Parsons and Harris.

Now, alot of people have been posting about these guys, and rightfully so. They're that good. Check out the few tracks they sent below. Enjoy.

Neil Young: Massey Hall 1971

"Neil Young live at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada from January 19, 1971. The files are a few generations down from the master, so unfortunatly there is a small hiss though out but that will seem to disappear when you get shivers down your spine hearing Neil say, "This is a new song..." and that song is Old Man."

This is what I wrote a few weeks ago in response to the '71 concert that has since been removed from Big O's database. It seemed it was only up for a short time or maybe I just got the tail end of it when I posted about it. None the less, many people have expressed an interest in the show and from the history of this site, a lot of you have try to aquire this amazing concert.

"His voice sounds so young and vibrant and this is a must have.", and since I wrote that, here is Neil Young live at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada from January 19, 1971, in it's entirety, for your listening pleasure.

VU: Angels EP

Well, I'm back from my trip and just getting over yet, another cold. I have tons of bands to post about, but first I thought I would put up another VU Series. I've recently seen Ryan Adams or his incarnations every where on the net and I figured I would throw in my two cents with the most recent VU Series entry.

Angels EP
is the first official release from the Raleigh/North Carolina based band, Whiskeytown. The EP, a vinyl only release, was distributed on the Mood Food Label in May of 1995, approx. seven months prior to the release of Faithless Street. Whiskeytown's line up at this time was Ryan Adams, Caitlan Cary, Skillet Gilmore, Steve Grothmann, and Phil Wandscher.

Angels EP is an amazing historical document. It's title track, Angels Are Messengers From God (known now as Faithless Street, from the Faithless Street LP) let's us witness the evolution of songs and the songwriting process. We all know what Faithless Street sounds like, Adams lead, Cary joining on the chorus, but this previous version is a full blown duet of Adams and Cary intertwining their distinct and captivating vocals for the entire song. It is absolutley amazing and honestly I prefer this version, but I will let you make your own conclusions.

The tracks on this ep, Angels Are Messengers From God, Captain Smith (a favorite of mine), Tennessee Square, and Take Your Guns to Town were finally re-released on Whiskytown's 1997 effort, Rural Free Delivery,an album of demos and such that was released by the band. I do believe that cd is now out of print, which prompted me to post the vinyl versions here and the dueted version of AAMFG. Listen to them here in there infancy and see which ones you like better.

You can find out more info about Ryan Adams here or here and can purchase Whiskytown here. A shorter post, but a great one. Enjoy.
