The Perm & The Skullet is a non-profit music blog devoted to bringing you music of all kinds.

Although we prefer that rustic, acoustic, unusual, whiskey soaked sound, we do like music of all styles and genres. If you have something you think we should listen to, by all mean, let us know.

All Links and MP3s are for sampling, evaluation, and introduction purposes only and are intended to provide exposure to said artist / film / site etc... If you like it, please go buy it.

Online, we recommend Insound, emusic or directly from the artist or their label. Locally, we recommend Schoolkids Records or Bull City Records.

Most Mp3 samples are only available for a limited time, usually a week or two. If there is something you missed, and it is currently unavailable or out of print, please let us know and we can see what we can do.

MP3s, Links, and Images can easily be taken down, so if you are the owner or their representation, and would like said link or file removed, just let us know and we'€™ll be happy to do so. You can E-mail me directly here for any questions or concerns or submissions.

Will Oldham

“As soon as it becomes your profession to critique a book, or movie, or record then, not only do you lose your passion for it, but it loses validity for whoever you’re trying to turn it onto because they’re going to be approaching it from a consumer’s point of view, not from a professional writer’s point of view.”

Nada Surf again

Nada Surf released The Weight is a Gift last month and it has been in my rotation ever since. I guess I bring this up because the video for Always Love will be featured on The Collective later this month and I am really excited. This album is full of "pop" tracks and complemints Let's Go very well. You can purchase the album from Barsuk here.

Magnolia Electric Co. new album

Hard to Love a Man, is the latest album from Jason Molina's, The Magnolia Electric Co. Due out October 11th, listen to a sneak peak with Doing Something Wrong courtesy of Secretly Canadian. M.E.C. is my favorite incarnation of Molina and he really brings that "Working Class Rock" back to a new generation. He reminds me of N. Young and recalls moments of Born to Run. Trails and Errors has been one of my favorite albums of '05 and What Comes After the Blues (another '05 release) didn't fall far from that tree. One of the hardest working bands in my eyes, they release Hard to Love a Man later this month and from what I've heard, it will be another gem in Secretly Canadian's crown.

It's now October 3rd and I haven't posted here since last Monday and my apologies go out to you all for the lack of updates. I was updating 2 to 3times a day before and hope to get back to at least 1 a day. I have seen there has been a constant stream of people searching the ol' blog and I thank you for that. More to come...I promise.

One thing that has happened since we last spoke is that I am now producing a new program that will be be premiring in October entitled, The Collective. It will air in the Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, & Chapel Hill) and will be a music video program, airing videos from local bands as well as national indie artists. I've been working with Barsuk and Matador most recently. If anyone has any videos for their bands, please send them my way. Post a comment and I will get back to you. There is nothing around here like this and I have the ability to create it so I will do my best at bringing the area the inspiring and entertaining videos from Indie artists that can only be seen on the web, and bring them into people's living rooms. Wish me luck. A new mix on the way and a posting on some tracks that are in heavy rotation.
