The Perm & The Skullet is a non-profit music blog devoted to bringing you music of all kinds.

Although we prefer that rustic, acoustic, unusual, whiskey soaked sound, we do like music of all styles and genres. If you have something you think we should listen to, by all mean, let us know.

All Links and MP3s are for sampling, evaluation, and introduction purposes only and are intended to provide exposure to said artist / film / site etc... If you like it, please go buy it.

Online, we recommend Insound, emusic or directly from the artist or their label. Locally, we recommend Schoolkids Records or Bull City Records.

Most Mp3 samples are only available for a limited time, usually a week or two. If there is something you missed, and it is currently unavailable or out of print, please let us know and we can see what we can do.

MP3s, Links, and Images can easily be taken down, so if you are the owner or their representation, and would like said link or file removed, just let us know and we'€™ll be happy to do so. You can E-mail me directly here for any questions or concerns or submissions.

Will Oldham

“As soon as it becomes your profession to critique a book, or movie, or record then, not only do you lose your passion for it, but it loses validity for whoever you’re trying to turn it onto because they’re going to be approaching it from a consumer’s point of view, not from a professional writer’s point of view.”

Vinyl Upload Series

Well a few things have happened recently that will only enhance your pleasure here at the P&S. One I got some storage space and two I finally got my stereo/vinyl equipment set up (remember that moving into our new house thing, well it's been all ipod/itunes since then, and I have finally had time to set my system up) So, what does that mean you ask, well as you can see by the title of this post, I hope to continue a series of vinyl only tracks not available on cd and write a few nice words about the album and post the tracks for your sampling pleasure. I have a whole bunch lined up and I will try to post a new VU every week or so. The only bad thing is that I will have to eventually take down these links to provide more, so these tracks will only be available for a limited time. I will try to let everyone know before I remove something though. So I hope this will only enhance your experience at the P&S. Oh, and for those Space Oddity guys, stay tuned.

THE DEADWOOD DIVINE

The very first VU is the The Deadwood Divine double 7-inch released through Bloodlink Records. This has to be one of my favorite "albums". Tom LoMacchio at his best! So much emotion tearing at his soul. Amazing! From 95/96 during the heart of the "emo" era, The Deadwood Divine perfectly combined elegant guitar work with the pain struck vocals of LoMacchio. I am also providing a shot of the lyrics to XV and XVI that were on the inside cover of the fold-out. These songs have some of the most intense acoustic work I've ever heard and combined with Tom's words and vocals, he takes it to that place were few artist venture.

LoMacchio has continued in music with the release of Five Years Later, which focused on a much softer side, the calm after the storm if you will. That's a great album as well so if you haven't heard it, check it out. LoMacchio is now performing under the moniker of Stereographonline and has almost totally abandoned the guitar and troubadour vocals for synth beats and Cure like songs. This 7 inch is one of my coveted pieces of vinyl and I hope you enjoy the track sampling below.

XV. words of divinity, now that of another
XVI. Given the inspiration to sing
XVII. and the summer together
XVIII. to set us free.

Nothing much, I haven't bought all the speciality equipment they have out there. Basically I just have my turntable hooked up to a digital recorder via analog connections and then, one track at a time, record onto disc or file format. Upload to my Mac, edit if need be and then convert to mp3. It takes some time, and you get the cracks sometimes but it's well worth it for a digital version of your favorite analog tunes. I've even done it for tracks or albums I already have because it sounds so rich (ie. Cash American recordings IV or BPB's Master and Everyone. I only listen to those albums from the recordings I made from the vinyl version. They just sound better). Thanks for the comments guys. more to come.
