The Perm & The Skullet is a non-profit music blog devoted to bringing you music of all kinds.
Although we prefer that rustic, acoustic, unusual, whiskey soaked sound, we do like music of all styles and genres. If you have something you think we should listen to, by all mean, let us know.

Charlie Louvin
I was wandering on emusic this week and noticed a familiar name, one I hadn't thought of in a while. It was Charlie Louvin, from the Louvin Brothers. To be honest, I was hesitant at first, I mean Louvin hasn't released an album in over ten years, but I am so glad I did. This country music legend has put out an album of epic proportions!
The self titled release is being put out through Tompkins Square Records and was recorded in Nashville during the Spring and Summer of 2006. It features guest performances by a who's who list including Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Bobby Bare Sr., Tift Merritt, Marty Stuart, David Kilgour, and members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, Superchunk, Blanche and Clem Snide.
What was really nice to hear, is that the album features several Louvin Brothers classics as well as country favorites first popularized by Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, the Carter Family, and the Monroe Brothers. The music here is absolutely tremendous. Louvin's 79 year old vocals warble you back to simpler times of front porch swing memories and campfire family revivals. Think of this as Louvin's version of Johnny Cash's American Recordings or Kris Kristofferson' s This Old Road, and if you're a fan of any of the artists listed above, then give this album a chance, and see where you favorite artists got some of their roots and influences.
In support of his new album, Charlie Louvin and his band will tour the US extensively in 2007, including special summer appearances celebrating the artist's 80th birthday (July 7, 2007). Sibylle Baier: Colour Green
In the darkness of Germany, while her family lay fast asleep, Sibylle Baier would record on her reel-to-reel in the secrets of her room. And between 1970-1973 she had recorded the songs that would be released on this year's Colour Green.
Gorgeous glimpses into the real world of Baier's life, the listener establishes, rather quickly, a personal connection and sense of comfort. Coos of lullabies that teeter the line of felicity and sorrow. An intimate revealing as you look through someone else's eyes, as you look through her eyes, to unlock a world that is never too far away. Gently plucked and strummed guitar provides the listener just enough wind to float away on the voice of Baier and into your heart.

Frog Eyes: Tears of the Valedictorian
The release I think I'm most excited about during the first half of the year has to be Frog Eyes', Tears of the Valedictorian, out on Absolutely Kosher Records. They will be releasing the album on both cd and lp formats and is set to hit stores May 1st. If you are the true fan, I suggest a pre-order, in which not only will you get the album one month before street, you also will get a t-shirt. Now who doesn't like t-shirts.
From what I've heard of this album, it should be their finest moment. We have to thank the guys at Daytrotter.com for posting three tracks the band did last year, one of them being the track Bushels from Tears.... The lp version and the Daytrotter live version of Bushels are both listed below for your pleasure.
An interview with pitchfork can be read here and just a reminder folks, Frog Eyes will be touring the album and gracing North Carolina May 15th and Local 506. A show not to be missed!

Gnomonsong's been busy
I've been talking about this loose amoeba of a collective for near a year and they have finally picked up an amazing amount of steam this Spring. P&S favorites, Papercuts and Danielle Stech-Homsy (Rio en Medio) will both be releasing albums on the Gnomonsong label, as well as the much awaited sophomore release by Jana Hunter.
Rio en Medio's album, The Bride of Dynamite, is out tomorrow, February 13th. Below are a few tracks from her previous effort to get you in the mood. On this album she is accompanied by Andy Cabic, CocoRosie's Sierra Casady, and Tim Fite. This has been near the top of my list of upcoming releases.

Gnomonsong will also be releasing Papercuts' Can't Go Back, his second release, on March 6th. His debut, Mockingbird was amazing and I expect nothing less here. Clap Your Hands Say Y...Yikes
What happens to a band when they go from obscurity to main steam? Hell, they are listed on iTunes new releases with a badge. The cd isn't all bad, but like many of my favorite bands, the studio system, and this pertains to films too you guys, fucks it up.
