The Perm & The Skullet is a non-profit music blog devoted to bringing you music of all kinds.
Although we prefer that rustic, acoustic, unusual, whiskey soaked sound, we do like music of all styles and genres. If you have something you think we should listen to, by all mean, let us know.
All Links and MP3s are for sampling, evaluation, and introduction purposes only and are intended to provide exposure to said artist / film / site etc...
If you like it, please go buy it.
Online, we recommend Insound, emusic or directly from the artist or their label. Locally, we recommend Schoolkids Records or Bull City Records.
Most Mp3 samples are only available for a limited time, usually a week or two. If there is something you missed, and it is currently unavailable or out of print, please let us know and we can see what we can do.

Bert Jansch: The Black Swan
Out on Drag City October 17th is the long awaited Bert Jansch release, The Black Swan. Being one of the most influential musicians of our time, I've really been looking forward to see how it sounds considering that our music today, or at least mine, are direct decendents of this man's very cloth.
This endeavour was produced by Noah Georgeson (Joanna Newsom – Milk-Eyed Mender, Devendra Banhart – Cripple Crow) and guest musicians including Devendra Banhart, Beth Orton, Otto Hauser (Espers, Vetiver), Helena Espvall (Espers), Kevin Barker (Currituck Co.), Paul Wassif and Adam Jansch.
I've been listening to the title track, available below, quite a bit and it's a must for any fan, new or old. You can download prior Jansch releases through emusic here.

Parenthetical Girls: (((GRRRLS)))
Just getting around to posting about this, but the remastered and expanded version of Parenthetical Girls' first album (((GRRRLS))) was just released Sept. 5th. The tracks were reconfigured, overdubbed, and vastly improved with the guidance of Jherek Bischoff. Additional tracks were recorded digitally in Bischoff's bedroom, the Center On Contemporary Art, and a meat locker of an abandoned Safeway supermarket. Additional contributions include the many lovely voices of Kitty Jensen and the subtle RIL of Jona Bechtolt. Tracks 1-7, and 9 were mixed by Jherek Bischoff, while tracks 8, and 10-14 were mixed by XIU XIU's Jamie Stewart.
A much improved sound and, while I like the original sound of the LP, I am finding myself leaning heavily on this new remastered version. Check out three tracks below.

Mixel Pixel
Early on in this endeavour, I wrote about a band out of NYC called Mixel Pixel and their 2005 release, Contact Kid. Well today we brace ourselves for their lastest LP, Music for Plants, out 10/31 on Kanine Records. Below are sample tracks from two EP's that were released earlier this year (Jul 11, Sept 19 respectively) and are slated to appear in some form on this new release.
A more defined and polished sound for sure, the band is expanding both their production value and overall musical scope while still remaining true to their roots of in-home recorded pop-psychedelia.

The Ghastly Ones
A real treat here in Raleigh is a tv show called Monster Creature Feature. It is an homage to the great 60's and 70's midnite horror programs. Well this one is hosted by Ormon Grimsby and is outstanding. Some of the great films he has hosted have been, Night of the Living Dead, The Brain That Would'nt Die, White Zombie, and the classic, Santa Claus Conquers The Martains. Musically, I'm mentioning the band, The Ghastly Ones, the band that provide the opening track to MCF. I've really been diggin' the surfstyle/ghostly/haunting guitar instrumentals and listed below are a few samples of their work. Check them out at their website here.

XIU XIU
XIU XIU are, how should I say it, amazing. Yeah, amazing will work. I've loved their music for some time and like most music I end up falling in love with, at first it was misunderstood or experienced in the wrong context, and sometimes your life needs to be in line to get some of the things I post here.
If you've listened to XIU XIU in the past and it just wasn't your bag, I will ask you to revisit them on their latest album, Air Force. A much more excessable album, or at least from what I've heard from friends that were not as fond of their previous works, but I do agree. There is a more "song" stucture here, but the writing and instrumentation are what really draw me to the album. I thought their last album was the high water mark. Once again I've been corrected.
