Although we prefer that rustic, acoustic, unusual, whiskey soaked sound, we do like music of all styles and genres. If you have something you think we should listen to, by all mean, let us know.

I'm piling up here and I apologize to those who are waiting for reviews and I do have a lot of great bands to pass along. Unfortunatly for you music lovers I will be out of town for about a week on buisness with no computer access or time to post. La Guerre Des Tuques
As mentioned before, I've been slammed here and more reviews of some of the latest albums I've received will be up shortly, along with a new VU Series.
I posted earlier, Valentines Day in fact, about the band The Diskettes, well David Barclay of that band, members of Parka 3, and friends have created a new band called La Guerre Des Tuques and they have just released their first lp. This S/T effort is described by Asaurus as "Musically, La Guerre des Tuques is rather void. Attempts were made towards The Make Up, The Montage, and Friend's era Beach Boys, while successes were found mostly in the vein of a moody and sullen Ohio Express or a technically improficient and thematically limited Aja-era Steely Dan."
Beach Boy harmonies are ever present and if you liked David's voice before, then you'll love it here. Check out the first single below and two others from Barclay's site, and stay tuned for more. I'm pilling up here.

Neil Young: Live 1971
I've had a lot of response to the TFA VU Series and if you are still interested, please give me an email, but this post should give you something else to crave, even if it's just for a moment. It's what I've been listening to non-stop.
Big O has recently uploaded Neil Young live at Massey Hall in Toronto Canada from January 19, 1971. The files are a few generations down from the master, so unfortunatly there is a small hiss though out but that will seem to disappear when you get shivers down your spine hearing Neil say, "This is a new song..." and that song is Old Man. His voice sounds so young and vibrant and this is a must have. I'm excited just telling you about it. Download the whole concert here or sample three of the tracks below and then head over.

I've been slammed at work lately and pretty much in all areas of my life recently, so I apologize for the lack of posts. I've been tring to get at least one a day, but you usual readers are accustomed to more like three or four posts, so hopefully I can catch up this weekend. I have a lot of great stuff coming up. I just got a huge in-pouring of lps/eps and such and some of which I've been waiting for, dying to post, but I wanted to hear the whole lp/ep before mentioning it. Also a lot of other projects are on the horizons, so as always thanks for reading and thanks for listening.

Kazumasa Hashimoto
Nobel releases music under the concept of "music for daily life" and has just signed internationally acclaimed composer Kazumasa Hashimoto to their label. Nobel's 11th release will be Hashimoto's 3rd album, Gllia. The album will be release March 10th and is on my list to purchase. The mixture of piano, electronics and field recordings, along with his amazing orchestration, sends the listener into a highly imaginative and fantastical soundscape. The track Monochrome prome to me sounds like re-birth, a rejuvination, if you will, or re-dedication. Check it out below. It worth a listen, especially if you liked my world's end girlfriend post.

Function
The latest release from the Locust cannon (Locust 76) is the LP, The Secret Miracle Fountain, by Function. Based on the tracks I've heard from the release, this is a must own. Function is the communally based band headed up by Australian native Matt Nicholson. The Secret Miracle Fountain is a "lush & transcendental rock album" recorded in over 10 countries during a 3 1/2 year period. Ambient sounds mixed with subtle vocals makes for a nice blend of other-worldy folkish post-rock that feels so organic it hurts. Function is definitely a band to keep your eye on.

They Shoot Horses Don't They
Speaking of albums that are going to be released on February 21st, one of the one's I'm looking forward to the most is the debut LP, Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, from the 8 piece Canadian band known as They Shoot Horses Don't They. Released on the Kill Rock Stars label, they describe the release as having, " Lyrical themes of desperation, betrayal and hardship, brought to light in this overly joyful jittery music". I don't know if that quote seems to promote the music or not, but trust me, it's good.
They also compare them to a few other bands, but I refuse to list all of them here sense I don't see the contection so out right, but one I do see is the Danielson Famile. If Bergman was still making movies, he might have this band on the soundtrack. How's that! You should know that these guys have shared the stage with Xiu Xiu and the de-funked Unicorns...so that says alot. Check out Emptyhead from Boo Hoo Hoo Boo, available 2/21.

Stone Jack Jones
If Americana was founded in a back alley, Stone Jack Jones would be crowned it's prince. This is meant in the highest regards and a compliment to a man who I slowly find myself being more connected with than previously thought. I first heard of Jones through AD, and further through Team Clermont. Dark shards of lyrics surrounded by everything from ambient drones, to acoustic guitars to wind chimes to drum machines, and when combined with the female accompaniment on Smile, a new world, of tattered white gowns and whistling winds blowing through dimly lit halls, emerges as a triumph in Jones' favor.
 His dad, a fourth generation miner, told his son, "Don't be the fifth", and upon those words, Jones began his life of music and wandering. Raised in a coal miner's company house, and being seduced with the dark woods surrounding the camp, it would not surprise me if Jones sees his life in shades of grey amidst a backdrop of charcoal shaded drawings. Charcoal trees, cottages, and towns, smudged out with his arm, as he drags his music across the landscape from one town to the next. Only to return and realize the beauty he created.
Stone Jack Jones had this to say about music, "music brings me here. music wakes me in the morning and carries me through the day and puts me to sleep at night. when i sleep music dreams me. music is a force of nature. it plays me like an instrument. it plays my blood, my bones and muscles, my flesh, my heart and breathing. music weaves me between worlds. it soothes the beast and scatters the seeds. it brings me to you..."
A chance meeting with Patty Griffin and a friendship with uber-producer Roger Moutenot got him making records and his latest release, Bluefolk, on Fictitious Records, is set to be released on February 21st. I highly recommend checking out the three tracks below, all of which will be featured on Bluefolk, and then make way to purchase this highly anticipated LP.

The Arrogants
The Arrogants are like your best friend's band.
They have recently released their 3rd effort, You've Always KnownWhen Best To Say Goodbye, a 23 track cd/dvd. Having released eps in the past, I figured this to be a full length release (it is), but after sampling the tracks provided on The Arrogants' website I wasn't so sure until I read what Twee Kitten had to say about the release. "This release can be considered to be an additional 3 eps - one mostly poppy, one mostly moody, one mostly mellow". That explains everything.
Out of the six songs provided three jumped out at me automatically and have not stopped in the rotation here. A mix between The Sundays and Cub, and if this is your sort of thing I recommend checking these guys out. Below are 3 tracks from You've Always KnownWhen Best To Say Goodbye.

Plajia
I received an email from Patrick Pleau, frontman to the band Plajia out of Montreal. They touted, they had a "Radiohead-esque, Pink Floyd-esque sound without the glory and fame." and dammit if they weren't dead on their claims. If you like either one of those bands (more Pink Floyd) I would recommend checking out Plajia.

Wilderness
New Wilderness. I got to be honest, the first time I heard these guys I wasn't hooked, but the more I listened the more I liked. A 2xLP version of critically acclaimed "self-titled" debut record is to hit stores on March 7th, 2006. You know I love vinyl! And their second album, Vessel States, will be released cd/lp/download on April 11, 2006. So there's some new stuff for you Wilderness fans. Check out Emergency from the upcoming release and Arkless from the S/T.

Awful Bliss Records
Awful Bliss Records is a new record label out of Italy headed up by Pat & Giulio. They are hard at work on their first release, Songs For Another Place, a double cd compilation (39 tracks) of previously unreleased tracks from USA/Canadian and Itailian bands. Jarid del Deo is the man behind unbunny. With help from his friends he puts together amazing records. His most recent effort has been the Typist EP, appearing on Important Records. This has now sold out and understandably so. It's good, real good. In 2004 he released the critically acclaimed Snow Tires (Hidden Agenda), which is equally stunning. A confessional that leaves you breathless.
Better Propaganda described the album as, "This is one of those records we lifelong music fans dream about as it combines the fragility of Elliott Smith, the humanity of Neutral Milk Hotel, the melodic sensibility of Matthew Sweet, and the careworn metaphors of The Mendoza Line."
Now that's an endorsement!

Bat For Lashes updates
Firstly, a new song, Mother Sea, has been added to the Audio section of the site and below.
Also, Bat For Lashes will be releasing a 7" single on Drowned in Sound some time in March/April. It will be The Wizard backed with I Saw a Light. It will also be available as a download single.

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice
Just thought I would give the mention that on 2/21 Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice will be releasing Gipsy Freedom CD/2xLP on 5RC. It's been described as a departure from their, oh we have to catorgorize everything, "neo-folk" label, to a more low-key free jazz experiment. But what I'm hearing off this sample track is amazing! and I'm really looking forward to this release. The album is loaded with 9 tracks, two of which, Didn't It Rain and Dead End Days With Ceaser, chime in at 10:52 and 21:20 respectively. Check out Don't Love the Liar from this upcoming release.

Danielson
First came Daniel Smith and then his incarnations of Danielson Famile and then Br. Danielson and coming May 9, 2006 on Secretly Canadian, is Danielson's, Ships, a resolution if you will, in the ongoing Danielson saga. I am really looking forward to this release and now that they/he has created a myspace account, we get one of our first tastes of Ships with Did I Step On Your Trumpet? The track is awesome and this will be one of the highlighted releases of the Spring.
Joining the Famile will be a slew of great performers including Deerhoof, Sufjan Stevens, Steve Albini, Edith Frost, Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh, and John Ringhofer (Half-Handed Cloud). In addition, to the new album release, coming to film festivals (SXSW) early 2006 is the five year project/film Danielson: A Family Movie. Looking forward to that as well. Enjoy a few tracks from the back catalog to whet your appetite.

Songs of Green Pheasant
Songs of Green Pheasant is the solo project of Duncan Sumpner. The S/T LP was home-recorded in a kitchen on a 4-track cassette recorder over three months during the summer of 2002. The album was released last fall overseas and stateside in November.
This is truly a beautiful maserpiece that needs to be heard more than described. The songs float by, dreamlike almost, through your head and send you to the Shire of your mind. I purchased this album last year and have been engaging it ever since, imagining everytime that Sumpner is recording these songs by the flicker of candlelight. Maybe a women in the room on the floor looking up in admiration and love. The album is calming, constantly making me fade in and out of reality, but is always accompanied by a warmth and devotion of a true singer/songwriter, that is Sumpner.
"Alongside Duncan’s overlaid vocal harmonies, the instrumentation employed on these recordings includes both electric and 12-string acoustic guitars, bass, drum machine, recorder, and a plethora of percussion and other sound-sources – windchimes, tambourine, fx units."
"The initial version of the recordings we were sent had been run through digital compression in an attempt to remove the tape hiss of the 4-track recordings. The results of this process lead to the tracks sounding like they’d been bathed in a kind of foggy, distancing shroud, or trapped in amber, a quality we really loved. Yet when Duncan re-sent us the uncompressed masters, the newly revealed sound (minus the fog) revealed a wealth of new detail and brought previously buried lyrics shining to the surface, and it is that version which we settled on releasing." The Notes and Scratches: Live Tracks
The Notes and Scratches are by far one the best bands I've heard in a long time and I strongly support whatever they are doing. I highlighted them in '05 and I think they are going to blow up in '06. They are one of the purest bands I've heard and I highly recommend checking them out. Thunderegg : Open Book
Thuderegg (aka Will Georgantas) gave me an email on recommendation from his friends The Twin Atlas and I'm so glad he did. Alot of blogs have posted about Thunderegg's most recent lp, A Very Fine Sample of What's Avaiable at the Mine (2005). but this post is devoted to the massive collection/restoration project that is Open Book.
Open Book is a collection of Thunderegg material from 1995-2004, that's eight albums, 213 newly mastered songs, 523 minutes to be exact, and a collection of bonus tracks, album notes, and the icing on the cake is a 108-page lyric book, chaulked full of drawings, notes, lyrics, and forms from Will, himself. The packaging is awesome and the run is limited to 1000 copies. If your interested in purchasing Open Book, the cost is $25, which includes s&h, and it can be bought here.
I've sat down and listened to almost the entire collection and I implore you, this is a must own. I was unfamilar with Thunderegg (minus the recent posts on their last lp) and I was literally blown away. The 1995 album, The Universal Nut, starts everything off with lo-fi bedroom acoustics, and emotional songs with subtle humor that makes them even more intimate. The next seven albums follows this same formula loosely and as time continues, so does Thunderegg's growth and exploration into song-writing and instrumentation. What makes the songs on these albums work is Georgantas, and his continued intimate connection with his audience. We get to hear him grow as an artist, a lyricist, and as a musician.
There are a few favorite tracks that I was immediatly drawn to upon first listen. I'll list them here with their respective albums and provide links for you to sample the work. If you like what you hear, I highly recommend you picking up Open Book, the collected works and NEWLY MASTERED versions of the Thuderegg back catalogue. Open Book is available through the Thunderegg website.

Sufjan Stevens Live at the Triple Door
Sufjan Stevens played alot of places in promotion of his latest, and finest album to date, Illinoise. One stop along the way was The Triple Door in Seattle, WA. This show was aired on KEXP and the files available are at a sample rate of 192 kibit/s, oh, that's good by the way. If you can block out the announcer on track 1 and forgive the fake emotion from announcer 2 at the end of track 8, you'll find this to be right up there with the WNYC/KCRW bootlegs. Catfish Haven / Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin on Tour
As the title explains, Catfish Haven and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin are touring together this month and as a gift to you, Catfish Haven's publicist has sent out an exclusive mp3 for me to pass along.
Catfish Haven has recently released a new CD/EP on Secretly Canadian entitled Please Come Back that coincides with their touring efforts. Catfish Haven, named after a trailer park in Missouri, is George Hunter - Vocals and Guitar, Miguel Castillo - Bass, and Ryan Farnham - Drums. The band howls with soul and emotion from start to finish and I suggest catching them live if you have the chance. Check out You Can Have Me, from their latest EP release.

Hailing from Springfield, MO, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin plays emotional power pop in the vein of The Shins. SSLYBY is John Robert Carwell -- Vocals, Guitar and Bass, Philip Dickeu -- Vocals, Drums and Guitar, Jonathan James -- Bass and Drums, and Will Knauer -- Guitar. My first exposure to the band was through Catbird Records first release (now sold out) and I've been in love ever since. Still unsigned at the moment, (that's going to change soon) this upcoming tour will be great exposure for both bands. With their solid songwriting and lovable persona SSLYBY are definitely a band to watch in 2006. Check out the track Accident from a live acoustic set on KDRU.

Bat For Lashes
Natasha Khan is "Bat For Lashes". I first heard of Bat For Lashes when approached by Devendra Banhart to play, All Tomorrow's Parties. They have accompanied CocoRosie, Jana Hunter, and The Castanets and if that's not a resume worth exploring, I don't know what is.
A striking voice is found in this free spirit that summons thoughts of Cat Power/PJ Harvey if folk were more there speed. But Khan has a quality all her own as she pours out riviting emotion with her mind numbing vocals. Accompanied by Ginger Lee, who shares in the mixture of piano, guitars, harpsichord, autoharp and electronic machines, and three string players Anna, Mary and Abi, they help set the backdrop, or vehicle if you will, to propel Bat For Lashes into an other world aural romance. My head has finally caught up to my heart, and I'm declaring Bat For Lashes as the band to watch out for in 2006.
An excerpt from her site reveals..."The music comes across like a gun that fires wolves...Majestic vocal howls, whispers and hiccups to a backdrop of soaring strings, esoteric folk instruments, distorted guitar, bass rumbles and thunder-clap drums."

Erin Day
Accappella Folk is one way to describe the beautiful music of Erin Day (Erin Daisy). Her vocals are unique and simply beautiful. Layered vocals, the clapping of hands, and the use of humming as accompaniment, she strikes at something pure that really sits well with me. Shockingly unsigned, check out three tracks from her EP, At the Frontier of the Skin.

Peter and the Wolf
In graveyards and abandoned busses is where you might find Peter and the Wolf, a project involving Red Hunter and Dana Falconberry for the Austin based, Whiskey & Apples label. For all intent and purposes we'll use their monikers, Henry Rutherford Jones and Dana Jean Clementine combine to form lo-fi acoustic hymns mixed with mesmorizing harmonies that can awaken the dead. Their voices blend so well together, seemingly as one sometimes, that you can't help but be taken back by the beauty that is Peter and the Wolf.
I 've always been partial to demos and below are two for you to sample. Also we have two tracks from the limited edition handmade LP, drawn by Red Hunter himself, which is available for purchase. For a "bio" of the band check here.

The Jolly Rogers / Oh No! Oh My!
I just received my 2 disc copy of The Jolly Rogers demo and their pre-release LP under their new moniker, Oh No! Oh My!. Both discs for, believe it or not, $2. This is by far the best $2 I have ever spent. If you do not own this yet, stop what you are doing and go here.
 These discs are chaulk full of pop filled treats and mind blowing melodies, that conjure up the best of todays post-pop outfits and yesteryears beach boy harmonies. Their music just brightens your day.
Example: Yesterday I was driving home in the headbanging traffic of I-40, but was I upset or angry in any way, no, not at all, because I was off some where swashbuckling to Oh Be One.
They are currently finishing the final stages of their self recorded debut LP to be self released in 2006. Check out their website, myspace, and go drop the $2 on these discs.

Quiet Bears
Lo-Fi, Acoustic, Home Recording goodness is what you'll find with Quiet Bears' 2005 release, Creatures. i just joined Myspace, (I know I'm behind on all the cool hip trends) and stumbled upon them. Quiet Bears is Johnnie Cluney and he is cemented in the "idea of writing songs and having different friends rotate the 'band's' lineup." It's been out since September, but hey it's what's spinning here today. Check out two tracks from the band and visit their website and their myspace.

VU: Starsailor
Tim Buckley's Starsailor is one of my favorite albums and by far one of his best. This is an album that must be experienced. After emerging as a melodic folk-rocker in the 60's, Buckley gradually evolved into experimental avant-garde territory. 1970's Starsailor is the culmination of his experimentation. At the time he alienated his audience with this record, but now one can realize the genius that is Starsailor.
If you are unfamiliar with Tim Buckley and are unsure on which to download (although, trust me, get this whole album while you can) start out with Song to the Siren and I Woke Up, which seem to be more accessible.
The amazing musicians on this album were:
Tim Buckley- 12 string guitar, vocals
John Balkin- string bass/electric bass
Lee Underwood- electric guitar, electric piano, and pipe organ
Buzz Gardner- trumpet, flugelhorn
Maury Baker- tympani, traps
Bunk Gardner- alto flute, tenor sax
AMG has this to say, "Buckley applies vocal gymnastics to a set of material that's as avant-garde in its songwriting as its execution.
At his most anguished (which is often on this album), he sounds as if his liver is being torn out -- slowly. Almost as if to prove he can still deliver a mellow buzz, he throws in a couple of pleasant jazz-pop cuts, including the odd, jaunty French tune "Moulin Rouge." Surrealistic lyrics, heavy on landscape imagery like rivers, skies, suns, and jungle fires, top off a record that isn't for everybody, or even for every Buckley fan, but endures as one of the most uncompromising statements ever made by a singer/songwriter."

Bishop Allen
Posts have been blowing up with Bishop Allen and I know why. Do you? Getting back to basics,with a self-release EP, Bishop Allen has released January.
