Will Oldham

“As soon as it becomes your profession to critique a book, or movie, or record then, not only do you lose your passion for it, but it loses validity for whoever you’re trying to turn it onto because they’re going to be approaching it from a consumer’s point of view, not from a professional writer’s point of view.”

Priestbird: In Your Time

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

An epic battle at the sands of time, sonic guitars juxtaposed against the ghostly vocals create an ebb and flow through a galaxy of stars... light pierces the soul upon crescendo and sets us free. Season of the Sun recalls these thoughts and it's the track available below and it's the second track on Priestbird's release In Your Time.

Formally Tarantula AD, a shedded carcass, a molting if you will, from earth to flight and Priestbird was worth the wait.

The three original members (Saunder Jurriaans, Gregory Rogove, and Danny Bensi) still tackle the AD, but with the new tracks they have created as Priestbird, they have reached a higher plain, a welcoming blast of rock that summons up feelings of a modern high bred of a Black Floydian Sabbath, with hypnotizing vocals and striking instrumentation that was strived for as AD, but finally achieved fully as Priestbird. My favorite tracks are Season of the Sun, the thrashing yet luring, Hand That Draws, and the chilling title track, In Your Time. The instrumentals Jackyl and Guest Room are also mesmerizing. Highly recommended!

8088 Records + 307 Knox

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

q: what is this 8088 collective thing?

a: we are currently working on a way to allow independent artists a way to promote themselves and sell their records as well as give indie records stores and venues a way to contact artists through our site. this is a massive undertaking that involves some extensive programming so don't expect it to be done anytime soon. however, we want to be able to provide resources to all the wonderful people that we have come across in the underground music world as much as possible, and the collective is one way that we are going about it.

A great article in the Independent all about the "collective". Visit them online at 8088Records.com

On a similar note, you might want to also check out Durham's 307 Knox Records, where they and the artists work together in putting the music out, allowing the artist to have much more control over what their product look, listens and feels like. Check them out online at 307knoxrecords.com

307 Knox will be releasing Midtown Dickens' cd on May 12th at 305 South, and I hope to have a review of the disc as soon as it's in my hands.

William Fitzsimmons: Goodnight

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

If soothing, almost heart breakingly, stunning acoustic folk is your ear, and it's always mine, then William Fitzsimmons' recent release, Goodnight, are the lullabies you have been searching for.

From the soft calls, to the banjo and guitar laden background on Hold On With My Open Hands, to the journey we take on Find My Way Home, to the pain soaked, but elegantly composed Everything Has Changed, Fitzsimmons has created a near masterpiece in every since of the word. He has created a life changing album, at least for me, providing the soundtrack for many changes in my life and I feel more secure, safe, in knowing Goodnight has been there.

While a few tracks might ride the line for some, Goodnight as a whole, and more importantly the tracks mentioned above, are songs that any musician would die for. Some people wait their whole life to create a small crack into the wall of music, but with Goodnight, William has broken that wall down and when he crawls through the crumbling rocks he looks up at you, embraces you and calls you his brother.

A must own release that sits nestled in my top 10 of 2007. Highly recommended and a must own!

Avey Tare and Kria Brekken: Pullhair Rubeye

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

A magical dream that we awake from. Those moments of life through blurry eyes. That line in which we cling to between realities. This is where Pullhair Rubeye lives and prospers.

With this release and Panda Bear's earlier release, "The Animal Collective" are taking over my best of lists for '07 like a storm. Pullhair is an album that needs to be experienced. It's not something that can be just thrown on, it's an event, a journey, and it's one of the most thought provoking and mind bending experiments I've heard this year.

Officially being released as reversed versions of the recorded tracks, and by all means I respect the artist's wishes and in some ways it thrives this way, but just listen to tracks like Opis Helpus or Who Wellses in My Hoff in the reversed versions of the lp (the forward versions) and be blown away. They had to figure that it was going to be done, even if it's the consumer who flips them in some editing program.

The perfect release in my opinion would have been a two disc release, with both versions, heck I'd spend the extra dough for that. I know there are those who will say that I, or anyone, shouldn't reverse these tracks to hear what was recorded because this is not what was released, but I say to you, just listen...just listen. Below is the released track and a reversed version. Enjoy.

Windmill: Puddle City Racing Lights

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Matthew Thomas Dillon is Windmill and with his first proper release, Puddle City Racing Lights, due out April 16th on Melodic, available now for advanced download, be prepared to be blown over.

Vocals that conjure up mixed thoughts of Daniel Smith or Daniel Johnston and musical stylings that play modern circus pop based and built upon the intertwining of keen piano skills, swooping arrangements that incite, and sprinkled with the otherworldliness of The Flaming Lips spirit. All this, accompanied by a slew of friends...and a new Famile is born.

Overall, Puddle City Racing Lights is an ambitious debut record and one of the bright spots of the year so far. The release takes us on a great musical journey and I'm sure it's one that will demand multiple spins throughout the year. Below is a track from the release with a link to acquire the advanced release.
